Weathering with You

Movie Review

This movie was an exploration of a strange and unrealistic plot-line, and also has an unfortunate line-up of un-interesting characters. Hodaka, the main character, is a kid from the countryside, and his drama and breakdowns felt really immature and overplayed. I did not find him to be likable and I also did not really see any character growth. From start to finish, he is essentially a kid who is lost, figuring things out, and doing impulsive things based on his gut. Maybe he is interesting to some people, but he was really annoying to me.

The music and animation in this movie is very reminiscent of Kimi No Nawa (Your Name), the hit anime movie the director came out with a few years ago. The only reason people flocked to go see Weathering with You in theaters was to hope for a movie that could be just as good. I would say that it was only half as good. However, the visuals and music are gorgeous and remind me of all the reasons why I love Japanese animation and storytelling. I love the colors, the background details, and everything audiovisual about this film! But unfortunately, that doesn’t really make up for the subpar story, and I don’t think I would be interesting in watching this again.
