To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

Movie Review

I went into this movie fully excited and expecting a fun rom com, but it was a cringe-fest…To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: P.S. I Still Love You is the second movie in the To All the Boys series, and as much as I love Lana Condor and the Asian representation in popular culture (cheers to the author, Jenny Han!!), I have to admit that this second movie fell really flat. If you haven’t watched the first movie and you don’t want any spoilers, you should probably stop reading now.

Essentially, Lara Jean encounters an old flame and starts developing these conflicting feelings between wanting the perfect relationship with Peter and exploring the what-ifs with John Ambrose. I think casting Jordan Fisher as John Ambrose was amazing and he was my favorite in this movie by far! Usually I always go for the main male lead, but honestly, this time, I was really rooting for the second male lead…maybe that’s why this movie was more disappointing to me than it should have been. Anyway, other than my disappointment over the fate of John Ambrose, I also felt like Lara Jean was written off as extra annoying and over-the-top. The “cute” things she would say to Peter made me cringe from the very first scene. And that aquarium scene was so weirdly shot and unnecessary? Don’t even get me started on the final scene, because if there was some artistic intention behind it, I’m not sure what it was. Maybe I’m a sadist, but by far, my favorite parts were when she and Peter were arguing.

We all know that rom coms aren’t supposed to be “good,” so maybe half the fun of watching it is getting to nit-pick at how awful it was. Honestly, the trailer itself was more fun to watch than this movie. But accept me for the hypocrite that I am, because despite everything I’m saying, I am still a loyal fan of this series. I’ll be here to watch the third installation, so we’ll see how that goes :)!
