Ronny Chieng: Asian Comedian Destroys America!

Stand-up Review

I rarely watch stand-up comedy specials, but the Netflix marketing promos really got me this time! Ronny Chieng’s stand-up was hilarious and relatable to me, and I have to admit that a lot of it was because I was really into his jokes about Asian culture. I wouldn’t say that it made me laugh as uncontrollably as Ali Wong’s stand-up (which is the gold standard for me), but I found myself smiling and giggling almost the entire way through.

The theme of Ronny Chieng’s stand-up was pretty much about his “foreigner’s” perspective on the quirks of American culture and people. I really liked his jokes about Chinese people, such as when he talks about Chinese people loving money, Chinese parents only wanting their children to become doctors, and China’s beef with Japan. He also made a risky joke about Isis that fell a bit flat with the audience, but hey, you gotta take risks sometimes with comedy! And it was definitely a memorable moment for me. What also makes Ronny great is his facial expressions and full use of his body. When he mimes a subway door hitting his leg, it felt both ridiculous and hilarious, but iI was howling with laughter! I’m definitely a fan of Ronny Chieng’s humor, and I look forward to seeing more of him in the future.
