Homegoing

Book Review

Homecoming is a gorgeously written and heartwarming novel about family and a love that transcends generations. The setting of the story starts in Africa during a period where colonialism is just beginning to thrive and change the landscape of the country. As wars, slavery, and other circumstances move the story forward throughout the years, each character is faced with the new challenges of their time.

The author, Yaa Gyasi, has a gift for writing stories. Every chapter gives us a personal and engaging insight into a new character, and yet everything feels woven together. If you read the physical book, there’s a very helpful family tree in the beginning that helps track how each character is related to each other, because it could get a little bit confusing. Each chapter focuses on a new character and a new generation of this growing family. In this way, it’s so intriguing to see how far each person goes in comparison to the generation before, and how their growing pains and life lessons become a part of a collective whole. This is definitely one of my favorite books of 2020 (even though the year just started), because it’s just so engaging and full of meaningful moments. I learned a lot as well, and I would highly recommend it to everyone!
