Queenie

Book Review

Queenie is a young adult fiction novel by Candice Carty-Williams that mostly felt like a lot of words and no deep meaning. It tells a story of a young woman in her mid-20s in modern-day UK, and it is about her dealing with millennial traumas - a bad break-up, terrible online dating, etc. It also subtly delves into a lot of social issues that black women often face, like racial profiling. I think a big reason I only found this book to be a slow burn was because I could not connect with Queenie or really relate to her experiences. Maybe around 3/4 of the way through, I started to feel like I might have been judging her character too harshly, and began to find deeper meaning behind the story. I feel like this book has a good message at its heart, but in the end, I still feel that there was nothing really exciting or memorable about it for me.
