Maid TV Show Review: A Favorite of 2021!
Maid is a Netflix limited series that is based on a memoir. The premise is that a young woman in her early 20s, Alex, goes through a series of life-changing, traumatic events as she escapes from domestic/emotional abuse with her two-year-old daughter. To survive and make money, she starts working as a maid, hence the title of the show.
I thought this limited series was really fantastic and emotional to watch. Truly one of the best and most gripping shows of 2021. Though having said that, I don’t think this is a show I will want to rewatch because it can be a bit of a downer LOL. Ultimately, Alex finds herself constantly near the bottom-most rung of society, scraping by on pennies and brainstorming ways to pay for basic necessities. Like a roller coaster ride of emotions, there are constant ups and downs to the story.
Despite the story being kind of depressing, I found this show to be very educational about the inefficiencies of welfare programs. It’s sadly the case that people in America who are in dire need of help end up having to navigate complex legal systems to obtain assistance. From start to finish, I felt this overwhelming frustration with the system and all of the hurdles Alex had to navigate.
A major highlight for me in this series was watching Anika Noni Rose as Regina, the really rich lawyer who Alex repeatedly goes to clean for. The relationship between the two start off a bit fractured, but the way in which they end up helping each other was really heartwarming to watch.
Maid is filled with a ton of memorable moments and scenes that will resonate with me for some time to come. I think it’s very binge-able, despite being quite heavy most of the time. And ultimately, it’s a story where you kind of know that despite all the ups and downs, the main character is going to claw her way out and find ways to survive.
