Insecure Seasons 1-4

TV Show Review

Insecure has been on my list of shows to watch for months, and I am so grateful that I am finally caught up with this comedic gem. I remember a particular scene in the first episode that made me laugh out loud, and I’ve been hooked ever since! Insecure is a dramedy (30 minute episodes) about modern-day black people living in LA. It is centered mainly around a woman named Issa Dee, who is in her late 30s, and the immediate circle of friends in her life. I don’t believe there are many shows out there that feature modern-day black beauty and culture, and it’s even rarer to find one with such comedic sensibility as Insecure. While it is comedic at its core, it doesn’t shy away from social commentary and tough conversations - such as with postpartum depression, police brutality, and micro-aggressions in the work place. This show was eye-opening for me, because it features culture, music, clothing, and personalities that I normally wouldn’t experience in my day to day life.

Molly!

Molly!

In terms of characters, I feel that Issa and Molly are the heart of the show. Molly is Issa’s best friend and a bad-ass lawyer. The chemistry, humor, and banter is so amazing when they are on screen together, and I love it so much! But of course, they are also deeply flawed and don’t see eye-to-eye at times, which makes for some rough episodes where they are pitted against each other. I love their friendship so much, and it’s a big reason why I keep watching. Another major recurring character in the series is Lawrence, Issa’s “boyfriend.” Lawrence is also an interesting character with his own set of issues - sometimes you love him and sometimes you hate him. I remember there was an episode (in season 2 I think?), where it was split into three parts - “30 days with Lawrence,” “30 days with Molly,” and “30 days with Issa” - and it showed their separate POVs as they lived through the same 30 days. I thought that was a really fun episode, and probably one of my favorites of the series. This show has certainly made me fall in love with some stunning actors/actresses, like Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, and Jay Ellis.

Overall, Insecure is absolutely hilarious and worth your time if you enjoy dramadies! There’s a lot of thought and heart that goes into developing each character’s arc, and it’s also a really beautiful show in terms of production quality (the wardrobe choices are FIRE). Also be wary that this show is rated mature for a reason, and there are some really steamy and explicit sex scenes. I hate to be a prude, but I found it a bit intense at times. Oh, and if you were wondering what scene was so funny in episode 1, it was when Issa and Molly were in the club. Issa was reaching out for a handshake but got ignored, and pretended she was actually doing a dance move instead. Physical comedy at its best LOL.
