Daisy Jones & the Six

Book Review

Daisy Jones & The Six is a story told through all of the voices of its characters, like reading transcripts from a televised interview...When I first started reading, I thought "I'm going to hate this book if it's going to be structured this way..." Surprisingly, I found the book to be thoughtful and engaging. Even with all of the character perspectives jumping in and out, the story did not get confusing. I found myself wanting to learn more about the characters and their motivations.

To me, this book is a fun story about love, drugs, and music, but other than that, nothing that deep or outstanding. Having the book structured in a way where it's like you're reading an interview means that there's a lot that falls through the cracks. There's no going deep into a person's inner-most thoughts, there's no detailed descriptions of the scene, and there will always be a feeling that everything is disjointed. I think the author tries to elicit that disjointed-ness to make the characters feel more real and leave more to the imagination. When real people tell their stories in interviews, of course it's going to feel a bit disjointed because they all have different experiences and remember different things. But even if I see the merits of telling a story this way, I am still not a big fan of this structure as a reader.

I can tell a lot of thought was put into making the music feel real and precious, and I was surprised to see the full lyrics for every song laid out at the end of the book. It will be interesting to see what direction the upcoming TV show will take this story.
